This is the most common and beloved version of the story. The homeowner looks outside and sees a fluffy, reddish-orange animal curled up on the porch. They approach slowly, only to discover that it isn’t a wild fox at all, but a lost, shivering reddish-colored puppy, such as a Chow Chow mix, Shiba Inu, or Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. The story ends with the animal getting a warm bath, a bowl of food, and perhaps even a forever home.

Sometimes, the story is a gentle reminder that we share our neighborhoods with wildlife. In winter, coyotes can grow thick, reddish-brown coats and curl up tightly to conserve heat, making them look remarkably like large foxes from a distance. In other versions, it turns out to be a bobcat or even a maned wolf (if the story originates in South America), which literally looks like a red fox on stilts and can easily fool people in viral videos.
