What Was Levamisole Used For?
Levamisole was mainly used to treat mild infections caused by parasitic worms.
Considering that the conditions being treated are generally not severe and given the neurological risk identified, the EMA determined that the benefit-risk balance is now unfavorable.
In its official communication, the Agency stated that medicines containing this active ingredient will be withdrawn from the market in all European Union countries.
List of Medicines Affected
The EMA has published an updated list of levamisole-containing medicines that will no longer be available in member countries. National health authorities will now be responsible for implementing the withdrawal.
Patients currently taking medicines containing levamisole are advised to consult their doctor or pharmacist for information and to discuss possible alternative treatments.
